Ratu Boko is located about 3 km south of Prambanan Temple. Unlike most temples in Java, this site is believed to be a former palace complex, seen from its gates, pools, caves, and living areas rather than sacred temple structures.
Situated 196 meters above sea level, Ratu Boko offers a stunning panoramic view, including Prambanan Temple and Mount Merapi in the distance. The area spans around 16 hectares and includes key structures such as the main gate, pendopo, bathing pools, and caves.
Originally discovered by a Dutch archaeologist, the exact function of Ratu Boko remains uncertain. It is thought to have been a royal palace, fortress, monastery, or retreat. Locally, it is often associated with the legendary King Boko from the Roro Jonggrang story.
