Place of Interest

Ijo Temple is located on the slopes of Gumuk Ijo, the highest hill in the Prambanan area, at an elevation of around 400 meters above sea level. From the top, visitors can enjoy a stunning panoramic view of valleys and surrounding landscapes, making it one of the best sunset spots in Yogyakarta.

The temple complex is arranged in a series of terraces, consisting of approximately 17 structures spread across 11 levels. The highest terrace is the most sacred area, where the main temple and three smaller companion temples are situated. This stepped layout reflects ancient megalithic traditions similar to punden berundak.

Estimated to have been built between the 8th and 10th centuries, Ijo Temple shows strong Hindu influence and is dedicated to Shiva. This is evident from the presence of lingga-yoni symbols, as well as statues of Agastya, Ganesha, Durga, and Nandi (the sacred bull of Shiva).

Several inscriptions discovered at the site suggest its spiritual function, possibly related to ascetic practices. Today, Ijo Temple is valued not only for its historical and religious significance but also for its peaceful atmosphere and breathtaking hilltop views.
