Mendut Temple is a remarkable 9th-century Buddhist temple located in Magelang, Central Java, just about three kilometers east of Borobudur. Built during the reign of King Indra from the Sailendra dynasty, it is considered the oldest among the three temples aligned in a straight line Mendut, Pawon, and Borobudur.

Standing 26.4 meters tall and facing west, the temple features intricate bas-reliefs depicting Buddhist teachings and divine figures such as Avalokitesvara and Maitreya. Visitors can walk around the temple in a clockwise direction, following the traditional pradakshina ritual, while admiring the detailed carvings that reflect deep spiritual meaning.

Inside the main chamber, three magnificent stone statues dominate the space. The central figure, Dhyani Buddha Vairocana, is flanked by Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara and Vajrapani each symbolizing liberation from different aspects of human karma.

Today, Mendut Temple remains an important spiritual site, especially during the annual Waisak celebration, when pilgrims from around the world gather to honor the teachings of Buddha. Combining history, art, and spirituality, Mendut offers a peaceful and meaningful experience for every visitor.
