Located just west of the Yogyakarta Palace, the Royal Chariot Museum showcases a magnificent collection of royal carriages once used by the Sultan and the royal family. Originally serving as the palace’s carriage garage, the museum now preserves 22 historic chariots, many of which were collected during the reign of Sultan Hamengku Buwana VIII.

Each chariot has its own unique story and function—ranging from daily transportation and ceremonial use to royal weddings and even funeral processions. One of the most iconic is the golden Garudo Yeksa, a luxurious carriage symbolizing power and prestige, while others like Kanjeng Nyai Jimad are considered sacred and date back to the early days of the kingdom.

With intricate designs, European influences, and historical significance, the collection reflects the grandeur of royal life in Yogyakarta. Today, the museum offers visitors a rare glimpse into the elegance, tradition, and legacy of the Sultanate, making it a must-visit cultural destination.
