Nestled between the magnificent Candi Borobudur and Candi Mendut, Candi Pawon holds a unique and meaningful position in the spiritual landscape of Central Java. Located just 1.75 km from Borobudur and 1.15 km from Mendut, this temple forms a straight sacred axis believed to represent a spiritual journey.
Built during the Syailendra Dynasty in the 8th–9th centuries, Pawon Temple reflects the rich blend of Buddhist beliefs and artistic influences of its time. Although its original name remains unknown, the word “Pawon” means “kitchen” in Javanese, while locals also refer to it as “Bajranalan,” symbolizing thunder and flame—elements of power and purification.
Constructed from volcanic stone, the temple showcases a harmonious fusion of old Javanese Hindu and Indian architectural styles. Its walls are beautifully adorned with intricate reliefs of Bodhisattvas, Taras, and the sacred Kalpataru (Tree of Life), flanked by mythical Kinnara and Kinnari figures. The structure is crowned with a main stupa surrounded by six smaller stupas, symbolizing spiritual balance and enlightenment.
Though smaller in size, Pawon Temple carries deep philosophical meaning and is believed to have been built around the same time as Mendut Temple.
