Place of Interest

Banyunibo Temple is located in a rural area surrounded by rice fields in Bokoharjo, Prambanan, about 2 km southwest of Ratu Boko. Due to its quiet and isolated setting, it is often called the “solitary temple.”

Dating back to the 9th century, the complex consists of one main temple facing west and six smaller companion temples (perwara) in stupa form. This layout, along with its architectural elements, shows that the temple has a strong Buddhist background.

The main structure measures around 15 meters in size and height, with a corridor surrounding the inner chamber. Visitors enter through a staircase on the western side leading into the main room.

Banyunibo Temple is well known for its detailed ornaments and reliefs. Near the entrance, there are carvings depicting Hariti, the Buddhist goddess of fertility, along with her husband Vaisravana. Around the outer walls, niches decorated with kala-makara motifs once held Bodhisattva statues, adding to the temple’s artistic and spiritual charm.
