PT MRT Jakarta is preparing a plan to develop a historic area in West Jakarta into a more vibrant public space with the Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) concept and a placemaking approach.

The area, known for its colonial buildings, museums, and old-world atmosphere, will be renovated to make it more comfortable for tourists and residents who want to walk.
One idea to watch is introducing a tram in the Old Town area.
The Head of the Planning and Business Expansion Division of MRT Jakarta, Samuel Ryan Pradipta Pranowo, explained that the placemaking concept aims to create a quality third space.
The development will focus not only on buildings and infrastructure, but also on the community and local businesses.
MRT Jakarta wants to ensure that the area's distinctive character is not lost after the revitalization.
Chinatown and the area known as "Little Amsterdam" will remain part of Old Town's identity.
"We will revitalize Kota Tua. We hope to keep it vibrant while maintaining its heritage identity. So, Chinatown and Little Amsterdam won't disappear. This area will be enlivened by a combination of community retail and much more," said Samuel.
One of the most important ideas to follow is a tram that runs throughout the tourist area, helping visitors get from one point to another without relying on private vehicles.
"There will likely be a tram running back and forth within the Kota Tua area in the future," he said.
The tram would also add a nostalgic feel to old Jakarta while offering a more modern transportation option.
