PRAMBANAN SUNRISE-The mystical morning
The tallest and the most beautitiful Hindu temple in the world
Built in the 10 th century, this is the largest temple compound dedicated to
Shiva in Indonesia. Rising above above the centre of the last of these concentric
squares are three temples decorated with reliefs illustrating the epic of The
Ramayana, dedicated to the great Hindu divinities (Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma) and
three temples dedicated to the animals which serve them.
Built by Rakai Pikatan king of the second Mataram dynasty or Balitung Maha sambu
during the Sanjaya Dynasty. Not long after its construction, the temple was abandoned
and began to deteriorate. Reconstruction of the compound began 1918. The main
building was completed 1953. Much of the original stonework has been stolen and
reused at remote construction site.
