North Sumatra is a large province stretching from the Indian Ocean in the West
to the Straits of Malaka in the East and from Aceh in the North to West Sumatra
in the South. And the capital of North Sumatra Province is Medan. It is thick
with virgin forests, lush vegetation and jungle covered hills, terraced ricefields,
cool mountain streams, strong rivers, beautiful waterfalls, peaceful white sandy
beaches and large ancient lakes.
Travelindo suggests itinerary below to visit this region:
Day 1 : MEDAN - BOHOROK (L,D)
Arrive at Medan Airport. Drive to north-westward for about 3 hours to Bohorok,
orang utan center. En route passing through several small towns followed by vast
view of rubber and oil palm plantations with some countryside landscape. Stop
to see palm oil plantation from outside. If it’s in season you can stop to see
local “rambutan” and cacao garden, also stop to see local market in Kuala. Arrive
in Bohorok, check-in at hotel. Afternoon trekking to the orang utan station to
watch the orang utan feeding. Walk down about 25 minutes to the river then cross
by dug-out canoe to the gate of orang utan station. Then hike up another 25 minutes
to the feeding station. Watch the process of orang utan feeding at 03 pm. The
orang utans are free animals and cannot be booked in advance. Sometimes in fruit
season when there are many fruits in the jungle they might not come to the feeding
center. After watching the feeding process walk back to your lodge through the
same way.
( We include one time visit to orang utan feeding site. If the clients are unable
to catch the 3 pm feeding time at this day, they can do it the next day at 7 am.
Feeding time is twice daily at 7 am & 3 pm )
Day 2 : BOHOROK – LEUSER NATIONAL PARK TREKKING (B,L,D)
After breakfast, commence / start trekking and hiking in the tropical rain forest
around the station, accompanied by local ranger, for wildlife viewing. If you
are lucky you may encounter Orang Utan, leaf monkey, macaque, gibbons, siamang
and abundant bird life. Afternoon, return to hotel for overnight.
Day 3 : BOHOROK – TANGKAHAN(B,L,D) Elephant trek can be done on day 4 too.
After breakfast depart for Tangkahan rainforest, part of Leuser National Park.
The road is still partly dirt track road. Arrive in Tangkahan, check in the lodge.
Start on one hour elephant trek followed by elephant washing in the river, return
to the lodge. Simple dinner in the lodge. After dinner you may enjoy the peaceful
surrounding of the jungle with lots of bird sound.
Day 4 : TANGKAHAN- TREKKING (B,L,D)
This morning you will start trekking through the lush rainforest of Tangkahan.
There are 3 types of trek available depend on your physique and stamina.
The first alternative is a 2.2 km interpretation trail that will take two and
a half hours. Incredible tropical plants including dome medicinal plants can be
seen along the trail. If you were lucky you can find orangutan, leaves monkey, long tailed macaque and great argus.
The second alternative is a challenging 2.6 km trail that will take two and a
half hours trek. Steep slopes and many giant trees are along the trail. You might
want to swim and catch fishes in Lubuk Larangan.
The third alternative is an adventurous 6.8 km trail that will take six hours
trek. It serves for adventurers with healthy stamina. Crossing some hills and
steep slopes, you can enjoy the rainforest and find the opportunity to explore
bat cave with thousands of bats in it. The journey will be concluded by riding
the rapid current of Batang Serangan River on a rubber tube.
Day 05 : TANGKAHAN-MEDAN / DEPARTUTE (B)
Return to Medan in a 4 hour drive via plantation road. Arrive in Medan, drop
off to hotel or transferred to airport for departure to your next destination.
