Pawon Temple

PAWON TEMPLE

Pawon temple is a Buddhist temple located in the middle point of the strait line stretched between Borobudur (1.75 km) and Mendut temple (1.15 km). This temple was built during the syailendra dynasty (eight-ninth centuries). The original name of this structure is still uncertain. Literary pawon means a kitchen. Local people name the temple as bajranalan which derives from the word vajra ( thunder) and anala (flame).
This temple was built with volcanic stones. Though it is a Budhist temple, architecturally it has a blend of old Javanese Hindu and Indian art characteristics. Originally, the central cella had a pair of male and female deities at each corner of the building. Staircase wings has relief decorations, while on the outer wall, surrounding the square empty chamber inside the temple body, is carved with reliefs of bodhisattvas and taras and also reliefs of kalpataru (tree of life) flanked between Kinnara-Kinnari. The roof of the building has six stupas surrounding the bigger stupa on top of the temple. The construction has similarities in style and decorations with Mendut Temple, and it is presumed that this temple was also built about the same time with Mendut Temple.
